Help increase Magruder PTSA membership!
The PTSA is considering some changes in the pricing of membership. Our goal is to increase the number of PTSA members. For each member, the PTSA pays approximately $5 for state and national dues. The remainder is profit for the Magruder PTSA. Membership is one of our few fundraising activities during the year.
Please provide feedback regarding the membership topics listed below.
This past year the membership dues were $15 for a single membership and $25 for a family membership (directory included).
- This question is for current PTSA members: Would higher dues have discouraged you from joining this year?
- If you are currently not a member, would lowering the individual dues to $10 encourage you to join?
- If you are currently not a member, would the addition of a directory to the $15 membership fee encourage you to join?
- Under the current plan, anyone, including non-members, can purchase a directory for $5. Do you feel that it would increase membership if school directories were provided only to PTSA members?
- What other kinds of products or other incentives do you think would encourage people to join the Magruder PTSA?

I think the current dues are very reasonable. The directory alone is worth the price. I thank all the PSTA volunteers for the great job that they do.
I quit being a PTA member when I got nailed at Sequoyah, Redland, and Magruder all in the same year for three separate memberships. Since then nothing could convince me to join...I just got fed up with being nickeled and dimed to death.
Dues isn't much but why is there a difference between "family" and "individual"?
Restricting the directory to only PTSA members might get a few more to join just to have it - I buy the directory every other year, but I would only join once to get the directory of my child's school chums - we use it maybe once a year to look up an address or phone number - can get what we need off internet.
What is the purpose of getting more members? If it is to raise money, then the dues is important. If more membership is to show the staunch support of the parents to the school and PTSA, then drop the dues to almost nothing and draw people in.
I feel the PTSA does wonderful things for our students. I see the fee as a donation to the cause. A directory included or excluded would not affect my membership decision. Any other products or incentives are always an attractive gimmick for some, but we need to realize nothing is for free. If we get more for our membership, less is going to the PTSA, and raising funds is the whole point of membership dues to begin with.
I personally think that if the memership dues was explained in more detail more people would join - just what exactly does being a PTA member (paying dues) do for you? the school? the students? the school system? Who is it benefitting? I think if parents were educated better about PTSA Membership more people would join. Some years I've joined, some I have not - I have never noticed a difference one way or another. Never really understood where the money goes. We have a very generous and supportive school and I think if parents knew what our money was doing for (the children and the parents) there would be more of an incentive to join. I thik most parents want to support the school.
I think the membership dues are reasonable. The PTA at all of my children's schools do a lot for the kids. The price of membership is well worth everything the kids get out of it. I do like getting a directory, but I am willing to pay a little extra for one.
For the past two back-to-school nights, I bought the family PTA membership so I could get the directory. Both years the directory was suppose to be given to one of my children when it came in, but never was delivered. So I think more directories should be printed to have for back-to-school night when most parents join the PTA.
To anonymous of May 9, 2008 9:22 PM: The directories were sent home with the students. If your child didn't receive the directory, let me apologize on behalf of the PTSA. Also, while I realize that it's very late now, if you'll email me at louis.wilen@verizon.net, I'll send you a copy.
In the future, if you don't receive a directory within what you feel is a reasonable period of time, please check with the Directory person (listed at http://mysite.verizon.net/vzep53g1/mhsptsa/id44.html).
Thanks!
I agree with anaonymous #1 but would add. Keep PTSA membership prices the same BUT increase the price of directory only to $10.00 per copy/
I would sign up for $15 for the directory.
I agree with the person who said that it would be nice to see what the PTSA funds are supporting.
